The Sapphire Club is located in exclusive St. John's Wood, Westminster, London. Lucien Damrill bought the estate for its seclusion. It enables the members and guests of the club to come and go with utmost privacy. Not that most members care should anyone see them coming and going, mind you, but no one wants their sexual proclivities made public, do they?
In researching country estates, I found one I especially liked, and it is the estate I had in mind when writing "Serenity's Dream." It wasn't chosen for the exterior, as that is not the exterior people would come to see. However, the interior was the inspiration for many descriptions in the book.
The niches found in this hall, became the inspiration for the same features in the vast ballroom, where various tableaus were conducted. However, at the club, the niches were occupied by nude figures of men and women, in various provocative poses.
This drawing room provided the setting for the "meet and greet" type scenes in the book.
This Hepplewhite chair and its mates were found in the library, which also doubled as the office for The Sapphire Club.
Lucien drinks his brandy from this French Bayel brandy snifter, as do all of his guests. It does add a provocative touch to the decadent club, don't you think?
The erotic abounds throughout the rooms in the club. Sculptures, paintings and live models provide much inspiration for club members. I, for one, don't believe these randy lords and ladies need such additional aid, but Lucien Damrill is a self-professed creature of the flesh.
Speaking of Lucien. When I wrote him, I had a definite person in mind. Being visual, I really must see something. I pictured him to be forty years old, black hair with liberal doses of gray, tall, dark eyes with a strong, demanding character. He's unapologetic as well as uncompromising in his sexual needs and desires. The man I had in mind throughout the book was none other than Clark Gable.
His mature good looks and masterful mien fit Lucien to the tee. I can see him walking the halls of The Sapphire Club, on his way to a regular Thursday session with the the insatiable Lady Amelie Foxworth.
It was easy to imagine Serenity herself. She had acted in an immature way ten years before the story takes place, by leaving Lucien the day after their wedding, having not enjoyed her initiation into the marriage bed. Upon her return, it is no secret that both had enjoyed the favors of others during the intervening years.
Serenity is more mature and extremely sexual, as is her husband. The combination of immaturity and subsequent personal growth reminded me of Scarlett O'Hara. The difference is, Serenity never pouts. However, for her beauty, Vivien Leigh hovered in my mind's eye as I wrote Serenity.
I can definitely picture Gable and Leigh as my Lucien and Serenity. I hope when you read the book, you will let me know who you pictured. Just wait 'til you find out who inspired Prentice Hyde, the hero of book two in The Sapphire Club series.
Watch that hand!
I chose the names of my characters in several ways. I have a list compiled from early census records, I have books from the period and I also have my own genealogy. Many names in my books are taken from my family tree. In the case of Serenity's Dream, there are a couple of names from just that place.
Lucien was named for my husband's great-grandfather. He and his wife, Thereza, were Cajuns from southern Louisiana. They both died at very advanced ages, unfortunately both blind from what is now suspected to have been diabetes.
Lucien's middle name, Damrill, was the last name of my great-great grandmother Catherine Damrill. She was born in Boston. Her brother, John Stanhope Damrill, was the first fire chief in that city and saved the city from disaster in 1872.
Serenity's maiden name is Malin. The name was given to one of my dear aunts. That's all I know, because she doesn't know where the name came from, either.
Interview with Lucien Damrill, owner of The Sapphire Club
Lucien, I am so pleased you could join me today for this interview.
I am happy you asked me, giving me no choice but to submit. (He winked at me!)
You are not used to submitting, are you?
No, my dear, I am not. (Eye brow lifts, endearing smile crosses lips)
Could you tell our readers a little bit about the Sapphire Club?
Well, Brita, as you well know, The Sapphire Club is owned by me, but I couldn't operate it without the help of my dear friend, Prentice Hyde, Marquess of Wycroft, and of course, my lovely wife, Serenity. I purchased a very large estate in St. John's Wood, outside London, where our members come to, shall we say, practice their sexual skills.
Couldn't they do such things in the privacy of their own homes?
The sexual practices of which I speak, my dear, are best practiced away from gossiping servants and amongst like-minded people.
Can you enlighten our audience on some of the activities that one might participate in at the club?
First, let me say that all activities are consensual and only among adults. We have many rooms equipped with spanking apparatus and of course, the requisite paddles, straps, and floggers to get the job done properly. We also have rooms for more serious endeavors, such as real whippings. You would be quite surprised as to what people wish to do as a part of their sexual enjoyments.
We can also accommodate the more benign fantasies, such as orgies, role-playing and well, you must really come to see what we can do for you.
Our motto is "Blister their arses and f**k them insensible." That rather says it all, does it not?
I most certainly think it does say it all. *blushes* So tell me, the Sapphire Club is not a brothel, is that correct?
Oh, my good Lord, I am asked that question repeatedly. No, it is a sex club, where all arrangements are consensual and no money ever changes hands. For instance, should Lord A fancy Lord B's wife and vice versa, an agreement can be struck to conduct the liaisons at the club. Or if Lord C is unattached and seeks the company of a lady, there are always those ladies who wish to leave their mundane lives behind. It is no different really than meeting someone at a ball and seeking an assignation with them in the garden.
I do, however, employ women and men who will fulfill fantasies wives might not particularly enjoy, but that isn't what the club is about.
I understand you conduct private sessions with certain clients?
Yes, I certainly do. They are people who for one reason or another don't have a particular partner who will spank them or they have heard about my particular prowess in the sport.
Is sexual intercourse always a part of your private sessions?
That is at the member's discretion but I personally don't engage in such a practice. I assure you, I am in full possession of my ballocks, which my wife would remedy if I were to revert to my old ways. (*Wink* and *roguish smile* intact)
I understand that being a member of The Sapphire Club requires a very expensive membership fee and certain agreements. Could you tell us more about that?
Certainly, my dear. I do charge a very steep yearly fee, which gives our members free reign of the club. They can reserve a room, which will be outfitted for their particular needs. Should a meal, drinks or the like be required, we will accommodate their requests. They may use the club as often as they wish with no restrictions.
They can participate in our tableaus, which are terribly creative and well worth the fee alone. These are public displays and members can create their own activity. With such things being public, mouths tend to stay shut.
Our members are high ranking nobility as well as gentry who can afford the fee. The Sapphire Club allows its members to be as perverse as they wish without the fear that their secrets will be revealed, as long as no one is forced to do anything against their will.
How can you be so sure?
Because, darling, I am the keeper of the secrets. In all the years I have owned the club, I have never had a single incident. If Lord Somebody decides to, shall we say, tattle on Lord Otherwise, Lord Somebody will find himself embroiled in his own little scandal. I will never be afraid to use the information I am in possession of, but only if another member is being hurt.
Would we recognize any of the member's names?
Now that would be kissing and telling wouldn't it? Let me simply say this. Most members of Parliament are members, as well as important members of Bow Street and a certain monarch has been known to frequent the halls of The Sapphire Club. My wife laughs often about the well-known arses she has seen.
Speaking of your lovely wife, Serenity, might I ask you about her?
Certainly.
It is true that you were married but estranged since the day after your wedding, is it not?
Yes, that is true.
How did you feel about her return?
Well, I wasn't happy, but could hardly resist blistering her arse when she offered it up so prettily. The woman does enjoy a good spanking and I firmly believe in keeping her arse nicely reddened.
Is there anything else our readers should know about you or The Sapphire Club?
I understand you, Brita, have written all about us, naughty girl that you are. My wife informs me that you have interviewed several of our members, including Prentice Hyde, my dear friend and Phillip Allard, the Duke of Thornhill, and have published their stories as well. They are both stellar members of the club and their stories quite interesting.
I believe the club provides a service to the members they could never find anywhere else. I would be happy to greet any of your readers who wish to know more about The Sapphire Club.
Well, Lucien, I appreciate your time, but I see you are looking at the ormolu clock on the mantel.
Yes, dear Brita, it is nearly four and time for Serenity's spanking. She gets rather put out if I am late, though I confess she is rather often, earning her an extra lick or two.
